Four New Trial Color Sets from Williamsburg Handmade Oils: Signature Colors, Landscape Colors, Traditional Colors and Modern Colors

February 12, 2015

With over 150 colors to choose from, Williamsburg Handmade Oils has one of the most extensive lines of professional grade, quality oil paints.  For artists seeking a convenient way to experience some of the color families within Williamsburg, we have assembled four new introductory sets focusing on Signature, Landscape, Traditional and Modern Colors.  Each value priced set includes eight colors in 11 ml tubes, plus a 37 ml tube of Titanium White.
Each set contains a great selection of colors that are representative of the Williamsburg range and paintmaking philosophy.  There are many things that make Williamsburg colors unique, including a commitment to milling each pigment to its own unique standard to develop the richest expression of color and undertone.  Some colors feel slightly gritty; others extremely smooth.  This approach preserves the range of texture oil paints had in the past. Sets introduced are:
•    Signature Colors Set – Throughout Williamsburg’s history, exploration and experimentation have led to the development of several unique colors.  This set contains colors representative of these discoveries: Brilliant Yellow Pale, Alizarin Orange, Persian Rose, King’s Blue, Courbet Green, Italian Lemon Ochre, Stil de Grain, and French Ardoise Grey, plus Titanium White.

•    Landscape Colors Set – An excellent outdoor palette that allows artists to produce a wide variety of hues, shades and tints encountered in nature.  This set contains Permanent Yellow Light, Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue, Sevres Blue, Sap Green, Italian Lemon Ochre, and Burnt Sienna, plus Titanium White.

•    Traditional Colors Set – An ideal starting place for artists who are interested in exploring a more traditional range of colors, including Cadmium Lemon, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Cadmium Red Medium, Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue (Genuine), Raw Sienna, and French Raw Umber, plus Titanium White.

•    Modern Colors Set – Crisp and bright, with the ability to produce strong, clean tints, modern colors are excellent for painters looking to supplement traditional colors with higher chroma alternatives and contemporary painters exploring a modern a palette.  Colors included are Permanent Yellow Light, Alizarin Orange, Fanchon Red, Permanent Crimson, Egyptian Violet, Phthalo Blue, Phthalo Green, and Quinacridone Gold Brown, plus Titanium White.

The most recent issue of our Just Paint Newsletter (#32), which comes out late February includes an article titled, “A Palette of Textures,” written by Technical Services Director, Sarah Sands.  She explains not only the paintmaking philosophy of Williamsburg but also gives an overview of how pigments impact paint and in particular, how they define a range of textures within the Williamsburg line.  All Just Paint articles are also available online at www.justpaint.org.
